Who: Amaranth and RECRUITS
Where: The Dead Zone
When: Day 216, 9:00am

[ Despite the name, it's perfectly comfortable in the Dead Zone—at least if you're not an audition or otherwise hell-corrupted, whoops. But for this endeavor, the fact that neither abilities nor cameras function here is too ideal to pass up.

Amaranth arrives forty five minutes early, looking perhaps more overtly like a general than usual in her temporary Heart Soldier uniform. She has brought along a whole bundle of wooden staves.

Time to see what she's working with, here. ]

I will not be threading out actual instruction, and future training will be structured like the first aid classes—that is, handwaved unless specific interaction is requested. ))

Yeah, the lame "security guard" ones do it, too. It's pretty annoying.

So what is your plan?

[ a pause. she lowers her voice, but keeps her stance deceptively casual. ]

I trust you, but I'd still like your word that this will stay between us for now—you, myself, Shrike, and Intensity.

The plan is in its infancy and it goes from a slim chance to a nonexistent one if it leaks.

[She straightens a little, her tail swishing briefly, perking at the concept of being a ~trusting confidante~.]

Uh, yeah? I mean, who would I even tell, anyway?

I expect your Fang of soldiers will be curious about it sooner or later, for one thing. But the bigger challenge will probably be your unitmates, apart from Yvette.

[ a short sigh ]
Another thing LiliS and BARiTONES have in common is a large number of unitmates who, unfortunately, already have obligations to Hell.

[She bursts out laughing. ]

You think I’d tell them? I mean, if you want to trust Yvette, that’s your call I guess, but if you’re talking about this with any of them, I’m not sure I want to stick around to go down with the ship.

When it comes to fighting this war on the front lines, we're going to have to get our hands on holy weapons. There are two possible avenues. Either we've got to get back into the original Heaven, or we've got to get the fallen angels of Vengeance Hell to realize their fight isn't done.

[She opens her mouth to argue the first point, but reluctantly lets it go when Amaranth continues on. ]

. . . They were like. . . They didn’t care, I guess? It was just a job. And they definitely didn’t see us as a threat.

Which means they won’t see us as a good ally, either.

If you're referring to the fallen, then I can say that the group I was with made much better progress.

It's hard as Pasiap's ass to have one of those conversations without setting off an alarm, but LiliS's disguise abilities work just fine there, and I think that I could pull if off, given the proper chance.

[Wrinkles her nose at “Pasiap’s ass”, because what even is that. ]

Yeah, I could do the puppet thing to them. Guess they didn’t bother shielding their flunkies.

Powerful as they are, even they can't have eyes everywhere—or, as you said, perfect protection. So it is a chance.

Right now, though, I'm focusing on the immediate, which is getting us to a point where we're good enough to actually use whatever weapons we can manage.

Yeah, the pickings are kinda rough. Who're you giving me?

I'll complete the assignments once I've seen the initial evaluations—I want to get a good spread of ability across the Fangs, so we don't wind up with a weak link.

But based on what I already know, I'm thinking K, from AlcheME, and Cobalt. Nemesis too, if Shrike and Griffin can convince her to come. K apparently has a background in solo assassination work, so group tactics will be new to him, but I expect he's competent otherwise. Cobalt is someone I looked at as another commander, actually, but he didn't feel he should lead. Still, I expect he'll be a strong backbone for the fang while you give your attention to less experienced recruits.

And... do you think you can take on Kaguya?

I can take on anyone. If she's even got the guts to come.

"Guts" is actually why I'd like to put her with you—and I do believe she'll come.

Between you, me, and Shrike, I think you're the one she has the most to learn from. I've been giving her instruction for some time, so I can say with confidence that, though she's used to having access to unnatural strength, she should be favoring agility instead. And there's a kind of politeness to her fighting, still—her form is elegant, yes, but she's going to have to learn when to push past that in favor of aggression.

[PREENS because clearly being violently aggressive is a compliment.]

Like I said. If she's got the guts, I'll take her on.

[ ??? yeah, why wouldn’t it be? ]

Oh, and here—

[ She reaches down to the tidy pile of staves and tosses one to Kohime. It’s got some respectable heft to it, but probably not more than she’s used to from the Horde. ]

We’ll be training with these to make sure everyone has the same fundamentals. Feel free to make one your own—it’s one less for me to carry, if so.

[She hefts it experimentally -- never her favourite type of weapon (she prefers her claws, after all) but something she's accustomed to, so it's fine.]

Don't want some variety in your troops?

Long-term, certainly.

But like I said, when it comes to establishing fundamentals, I want everyone on even footing. Attack formations are more straightforward when everyone has approximately the same range. And regardless, the staff is an ideal baseline for mastering other weapons.

We used them when I was a kid, so I guess so. It was never my favourite, though.

I think Cap—ah, your Adora—mentioned something similar.

What would you consider your own preference, in that case? You do seem to favor close range.

My own claws. But they're not as strong here, for some reason, so I guess knives are the next best thing.

[Mostly because it does not require adjusting her combat style much.]
