[ Another memory of love:

It is still the grey of not-quite-dawn, in your tent, and Shiho is braiding your hair. There are simpler ways it could be tied back from your face, but the feeling of her long fingers trailing against your scalp makes it worthwhile.

(Not many women were ever taught to braid, but there are—Shiho admits—perhaps some small advantages to the fact that she had not always known who she wanted to be. And of course, now she is a woman as graceful and lovely as any dancer, paired with a warrior's true conviction. You've never been so in love.)

"What do you want to do, after?" Her voice is soft and low.

"After? After what?" The braid is done? Breakfast?

"After the war."

Amaranth and Shiho discuss plans for the future. At Shiho's gentle urging, Amaranth begins to admit that the war is wearing on her; even all her victories are not without their costs. And there is something else, too: a death she wasn't able to stop. But it doesn't have to be like that.

It's just the whispers of two women—both barely out of their teens—in love, and at the time it feels almost like a hopeful game of pretend. But what if a farm? Together? What if... a family? ]
